Liposomes are spherical particles formed from lipid membranes; they are sized between about 20 and several hundreds of nanometers. Due to the fact that these membranes can be constituted of the same lipids as cell membranes, pharmaceutical technology can employ liposomes (i) as biocompatible and biodegradable drug carriers as well as (ii) a model of biological membranes.
